Filming

We filmed the main basis of our music video on saturday the 17th. The feeling amoungst the group was that the filming went well and we got all of the main shots we wanted for the scenes in the city, however through poor time mangment we left it to late and it was to dark to film it. The reason for it being to late was that our camera ran out of battery so we had to stop and charge the video camera. This lost us crucial time which we can now use as a learning curve for the future.

Goodwins Music video analysis

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xPWqsIClPqU

Goodwins analysis of: Kanye West- all falls down

1. This is a hip hop video and contains a lot of the stereotypical features that a hip hop video would, the artist himself does a lot of performing in the video and there is also a lot of references to expensive possessions in the video.
2. The images used in the video are very illustrative of the lyrics, this usually happens when he is singing about clothing or something else that he owns, then it will show him doing something with it, for example, checking the time on his watch.
3. The music in the video is very simple and clean, this is mirrored in the images, they have chosen the setting for the video at the airport, and everything is white and very clean and crisp.
4. This video doesn’t contain many close ups of the artist as it is shot in first person however they get around this by showing the artist looking into mirrors and performing into them.
5. This video doesn’t voyeuristically show women it just stereotypes everybody, only the men work on security in the video, and the main character in the video is gold digging off of the artist himself.
6. I cant see any intertextual references to any other media products in this video.

We decided to email the band to see weather they would be interested in what we doing and if they could give us any perspective on what we were doing.

Feedback from teacher

This is a good blog. In particular your storyboard and the description under each shot is clear and communicates your idea well. What you need to add now are lists such as locations, props, equipment list, actors etc. - practicalities of filming. I know some of this is on the call sheet but it should be in more depth on your blog. It does not seem that you are producing a lot of blog work from home - make sure you do this and tag your name correctly. Keep going - this is looking great.

storyboard shot list

Intro- shots of the city
shot 1-
shot 2-
shot 3-
shot 4-
shot 5-
shot 6-
shot 7-

For our DVD cover we have had the idea of having a contrast between the fields and the big city, having the fields at the front bottom, then the big city in the background, we think this will look affective and show people the contrast. We will be using bright colours, in the fields at the front and darker colours in the city again this will show the contrast.

Shot list

High shots- we want to use high shots looking down on our character to try and make him look insignificant, this will add to the idea of him being alone in the city.
Close -ups- we will be using lots of close-up shots of the character to focus on his facial expressions, and to communicate how the character is feeling to our audience.
Tracking shots- these will be used quite a lot to follow our character, around the city.
Mid-shots- these will be used to focus on the character in crowds of people, while showing his surroundings.
Low shots- we will be following the characters footsteps, this will help add more shot types and make our video more interesting. these will also be used to signify the importance of the girl in the video.
long shots- using these shots will help us capture a lot of the characters surroundings, while still keeping the character in frame, this will help us set the scene.

Test Footage

This is our test footage that we took in order to see what shots will be effective for our muisc video. We found that the orignal shot where the camera swoops from foot to head of the actor would be a good way to start our video, we could maybe take that further and do it while the actor is walking along.

When the actor was walking through the crowaded place we got the effect we were looking as he stood out in the crowd as he was wearing white and everyone else was wearing darker colours which made him stand out.

We like the fact when the actor is running around being happy as the shot is blurry this is the effect we wanted as it is ment to be a day dream/flashback.

Feedback

This is the the feedback we received from members of the rest of our class:

"Good storyboard and the photos are good"
"more pictures needed"
"more detailed explanations."
"good ideas"
"need a mood board"
"Good story board"

Analysis of Feedback:

We are very happy that the storyboard received positive feedback as we also thought it was good and something we were proud of as a group. We are in the process of making a mood board at the moment so that we be ticked of the list. We will add more pictures to our blog as this will give people a clearer understanding of what we are trying to achieve.

After giving feedback to other peoples blogs we have picked up a few ideas that we could incoparate into ours such as analysis on famous music video directors, emailing the band to tell them we are making a video, Goodwin music video analysis.

Storyboard

The clip shows the main character (singer of song) with a girl somewhere in the country side. The emotions shown in this shot will be happy from both characters. The acting will be walking and sitting around in these type of shots showing enjoyment and a relaxed environment.
This clip shows the main character standing out in the crowd. This will make his emotions stand out more. We're going to use multiple shots showing crowds of people.
In this clip the story line will be continued showing the singer walking through the town. We are going to add band members within the shot however they will not be the main focus. The main character will always be in the foreground or the main focus of the shot.
Again this clip include a story line and band members. the main focus will still be on the main character.
This shot is relating to the lyrics of the song. We've chosen the shot like this to enhance the fact that he's upset because he's lonely.
Showing he's alone in his house. Showing it's clear that he's alone everywhere even at his home.
This clip will be filmed over a long period of time then sped up with people rushing past. It emphasises he's lonely and upset and that he doesn't know what to do.
This clip shows a flashback of how he use to be happy with his girlfriend. The actors will be showing good moods and will be in a nice location with a picnic to enforce the feeling of the shot.
This clip shows him hugging his girlfriend in the countryside. reminissing the good times in the past.
This shot is a close up of him walking through the city. This will be a tracking shot of the main character.
Showing him alone walking through the city, Showing he's lonely.
High long shot showing the location still in the city walking along, looking small and insignificant to the big buildings.

mika single cover analysis

The single cover for "we're golden" is a similar stlye to the magazine cover and the video, lots of bright colours, playful, and fun. there is also bubble writing used which in the magazine colour it is the same and is also a bright colour.

magazine ad analysis

This magazine cover for the artist Mika. The magazine cover should include, the artist name, when the album/song is out, the record company and possibly things like the artist website.

This magazine cover works well as it relates to the song, there are lots of bright colours which relates to all of the artists previous work, it also shows the setting of the bedroom which is in the video of the song. there is a strong link between magazine add and the video, it has the same props in the room e.g. the radio player and the bed.

Music Video Idea

We like how this video has used the drums in the field. This is a similar kind of shot we have been planning to use for parts of our video when filming in the countryside. Also we planned on using a rushing traffic shot sped up like the one used at the beginning
however we want to include our main character.

Thursday 1 October 2009

We like the idea of whilst our main character is in the city, we see the band part of the surrounding playing as a group and not being the main focus but are scene as the main character walks past them, we think seeing them in shop windows or outside a cafe is an effective idea.

more ideas/mood board

Here is our mood board, These are the original ideas for the filming styles and how we want the main character to be presented throughout the video.

We have found some good ideas we like from this music video by Just Jack. As some of our filming will be based in a city we like the shots from when the actor is going through. We also like this video as there are no band members just the actor following the lyrics making it a story. The flash backs at the end of the video of all his family members would be a good idea for the start and end of are flash backs.

lyrics

THE HUSH SOUND LYRICS

"We Intertwined"

In a field outside of town we could always be alone
Carry a blanket maybe a basket - and that's it
Innocence was the key I was locked up never free
Until you turned me

Like vines we intertwined (like vines we intertwined)
Carelessly growing up and growing old
Life was on our tongues (on our tongues)
And it tasted heavenly so good

I wake up and I feel alone
I was just asleep
Right where I belong
Inside this sad, sad song

I knew this was a dream it was too good to be true
Coincidences were a bit much too
Who wants to wake up?
Who wants to lose it?
Who wants to live in this place?
I don't, so I'll be sleeping in

Like vines we intertwined (like vines we intertwined)
Carelessly growing up and growing old
Life was on our tongues (on our tongues)
It tasted heavenly so good

I wake up and I feel alone
I was just asleep
Right where I belong
Inside this sad, sad song

Blankets here keep me from cold
Holding tightly my pillows
Frantically searching for her
Inside my head she's somewhere
She is somewhere

I wake up and I feel alone
I was just asleep
Right where I belong
Inside this sad, sad song

I wake up and I feel alone
I was just asleep
Right where I belong
Inside this sad, sad, sad song
